Course Etiquette & Fieldcraft: Being the Archer Everyone Wants in Their Group
Why Etiquette Matters
Field archery is social: you’ll spend hours walking, shooting and scoring with your group. Good manners make the day smooth; poor manners make it feel like a long hike in the rain (even when it isn’t raining).
The Golden Do’s
- Be ready: arrows in hand before stepping to the peg
- Be quiet: stop talking when someone is at full draw
- Rotate fairly: follow the shooting order
- Share the load: help with scoring, carrying and course tasks when needed
The Big Don’ts
- Don’t coach mid-shot unless asked
- Don’t touch another archer’s gear
- Don’t crowd the target while scoring
- Don’t pull arrows until scoring is complete
Fieldcraft: The Extra Skills
1) Reading the Ground
Watch footing, slopes and light. Notice where arrows are landing — it can reveal hidden influences.
2) Arrow Recovery
Mark where you think the arrow went before you start searching. Work as a group in a line — faster and fairer.
3) Course Awareness
Stay aware of other groups and lanes. Listen for “FAST!” and respond immediately.
