From Cubs to Veterans: Divisions & Classes
Why Divisions Exist
Archery is one of the rare sports where an 11-year-old and a 70-year-old could compete on the same course. To keep things fair (and fun), competition is organised by age division and shooting style.
Age Divisions
- Cubs – under 13
- Juniors – 13–16
- Young Adults – 17–20
- Adults – 21–54
- Veterans – 55+
- Seniors – 65+
Scottish tip: if you have a choice of divisions, think about distances and how your knees feel after a long walk.
Shooting Styles You’ll Commonly See
- Barebow – no sights, no frills
- Freestyle – sights allowed; equipment depends on class limits
- Bowhunter – “hunting style” restrictions vary by class
- Longbow – traditional bow; often wood-arrow requirements
- Traditional/Historical – heritage styles with specific limitations
Why It Matters
- Different pegs = different distances
- Different classes = different equipment rules
- Wrong category can mean disqualification (or at least a long chat at admin)
